Albert Edward Hawkes was born in Northfleet, Kent, on 29th March 1895,(Strood Q2-1895 2A:556) baptised St Botolph's Northfleet on 12th May 1895, son of James and Lucy HAWKES (née CLAYDON).

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at 48 Artillery Way, Woolwich with his father James HAWKES [50] a wheelwright, born Luton; his mother Lucy [40] born Cambridgeshire; brother Fred [19] blacksmith born Hendon, Middlesex and sister Florence [16] born Dartford Kent.

1911 census...Aged 16, a houseboy, he was at Whitemans Green, Cuckfield, Sussex with his brother William [32] shoeing smith born Luton and his wife Edith [33] and their three children, Jessie [9], Charles [5] and Samuel [3 months], all born in Cuckfield. Also there were Albert's parents, his mother now recorded as born in Newmarket.

His father died before the CWGC recorded his family details. His mother is recorded as being at Cuckfield by CWGC. No record has been found of the family's presence in Swaffham Prior, however there were Hawkes in the village.

Was he perhaps the Alb. HAWKES (labourer) who sailed from Liverpool aboard the "Virginian" on 28th April 1911, heading for Quebec ?


He enlisted at Sherbrooke, Quebec on 9th February 1915, giving his date of birth as 29th March 1895 in Northfleet, Gravesend, Kent. A farm labourer, his next of kin was father James Hawkes of 62 Gatehouse, Bolney, Sussex. 5 feet 8 inches (172.7 cm)tall, chest 36" to 38" (91.4 to 96.5 cm), blue eyes, fair hair, Church of England. That much from Canadian Archives - RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 4163 - 41.

His unit sailed to UK on 18th July 1915. He arrived in France on 24th October 1915. Promoted acting lance Corporal with pay on 29th June 1916 and Lance Corporal to following day !, then to Acting Corporal with pay on 20th September 1916.
On 22nd July 1916 he was admitted to 86 Field Ambulance suffering from shell shock
He was last seen in the trenches near Courcelette on 2nd October 1916 and later presumed dead.
